This "getting started" guide has been written for those interested in investigating
alpaca ownership, and need some tips on things to consider.
It is not intended to
be comprehensive or definitive. Please keep in mind that this advice is based on
our opinions and experiences. This is just one approach - there are probably as many
different opinions about getting started in alpacas as there are alpacas in the US!
Planning - Planning - Planning!
First and foremost, potential owners should determine if the investment in both time and money is something they are willing and able to commit to.
Alpaca ownership is a wonderful and moving experience, and breeding alpacas has the
potential to be very rewarding. It must said however, raising livestock is simply
not for everyone, and despite the enthusiasm over alpacas, the alpaca business is
not a get rich quick scheme.
Market prices for alpacas make them a serious investment, and like all investments, you must be aware of the potential risk of loss. Many questions should be considered, and a careful plan set up before moving ahead.
As with any business, it takes hard work and commitment to be successful. The truth is we have never worked so hard at anything as we have our alpaca business - now comes the good part - the shear joy that comes from working with such wonderful animals makes that work seem effortless.
Next, decide which of the many different reasons for owning alpacas fits into your
level of commitment.
As an income generating business (part or full time)
As a hobby (i.e. - training and showing (click here to learn more about the fun activity of Alpaca Showing)
Desire for a lifestyle change
As companion animals (watch a short clip about alpacas as pets)
Fleece for spinning or processing into yarn
On or off farm ownership (also referred to as agisting or boarding at a host farm)
Diversifying current livestock operations
Tax Benefits
Or, maybe you just find them irresistible
Whether you are thinking of starting a breeding business, looking for an investment, or you just want some alpacas in your pasture, you should start with a simple outline of where you are, where you would like to be, and when you want to get there. Once you determine what you want, develop steps and goals to keep yourself moving forward. Every experienced business person knows, you will never be sorry you invested your time and efforts in establishing a solid plan.
